Deism
The term Deism is derived from the Latin word "deus," which means 'God'. It is a rational philosophy and theological theory that rejects traditional religious teachings based on divine revelation, inspiration, prophets, and miracles. Instead, Deism acknowledges the existence of a Supreme Creator based solely on human reason and empirical observation of the material world.
Deism portrays the universe as an automated machine and God as a "Clockmaker God," who created the universe according to perfect laws, wound it up, and then ceased to intervene in its day-to-day affairs.
Basic Principles
The founder of English Deism, Lord Herbert of Cherbury, presented five fundamental principles of Deism:
1. Existence of God: A supreme God exists.
2. Worship: This God is worthy of reverence and worship.
3. True Worship: True worship lies in moral virtue and righteousness rather than in specific religious rituals.
4. Repentance: Regret and repentance for one's sins are essential.
5. Reward and Punishment: After death, there is reward and punishment for the good and the wicked under the cosmic system of justice.
Types of Deism
Christian Deism: This perspective considers Jesus Christ to be a great moral teacher but rejects the supernatural phenomena, miracles, and the concept of the Trinity in Christianity, deeming them contrary to reason.
Classical (or Strict) Deism: According to this view, while God is indeed the Creator of the universe, He is completely detached from human prayers, moral lives, and individual affairs.
German Rational Deism: This approach views religion through the lens of rationalism, where moral laws stem from the internal structure of human reason rather than from divine revelation.
Pandeism: According to this theory, after creating the universe, God transformed Himself into the material universe itself. Thus, the universe and God are no longer separate entities.
Moralistic Therapeutic Deism (MTD): This is a contemporary, practical belief system in which God merely helps individuals become good people and provides emotional comfort, but does not actively intervene in the affairs of daily life.
