The Journey from Nonexistence to Existence: The Quranic Rational Challenge that Shook the Foundations of Materialism

In a serene moment of the night, when we look up at the azure sky stretched over our heads, the billions of stars floating within it, and the exquisite balance of life on Earth, a profound question knocks at our inner door: Why does all this exist? Where did this infinite equilibrium of the universe and our very own existence come from? For centuries, materialism and atheism have attempted to dismiss these questions as "mere coincidence," but the Holy Quran, instead of utilizing dry philosophical jargon, directly awakens and shakes human reason and primordial nature (fitrah).

The strongest, most comprehensive, and unanswerable Quranic argument for the existence of the Divine Creator is found in verses 35 and 36 of Surah At-Tur. This is not an appeal based on blind faith or mere tradition; rather, it is a profound intellectual siege that compels a materialistically minded individual to introspect deeply. Let us delve into the depths of this timeless Quranic and rational proof.

The Beginning of the Universe: The Cage of Time and Material Constraints

To comprehend this argument, we must first acknowledge the foundational truth that our universe has not always existed; rather, it had a specific, designated beginning. A long-standing sanctuary of atheistic thought has been the claim that matter is eternal and infinite, thereby requiring neither a beginning nor a Creator. However, both sound reason and modern physics utterly refute this premise.

·       The Impossibility of an Actual Infinite:

The passage of an "actual infinity of time" in the past is logically impossible. If the universe had no beginning and the past were infinite, the needle of time would never have been able to traverse through it to reach the present day. Since an infinity can never be crossed or completed, a starting point in the past is mathematically and logically inevitable.

·       The Cosmic Finitude (Contingency):

The second proof lies in the inherent finitude and material characteristics of the universe itself. Every material object around us possesses a specific volume, density, and temperature. It is an established principle of physics that a temporary or limited entity cannot define its own boundaries. The energy of the universe is continuously undergoing degradation. Had the universe been eternal, then according to the Second Law of Thermodynamics, all its usable energy would have been depleted long ago, leaving the universe in a state of cosmic heat death. This material finitude explicitly implies the existence of an external, transcendent power that bestowed these specific physical limits and laws upon it.

The Challenge of Surah At-Tur: Four Logical Paths and the Verdict of Reason

Once it is proven that the universe had a beginning, the Holy Quran presents four clear, unambiguous logical possibilities to human reason. Surah At-Tur states: "Were they created by nothing, or were they the creators of themselves? Or did they create the heavens and the earth?"

Let us dispassionately analyze each of these four possibilities one by one:

1.     Was the universe created from nothing? The first possibility is that the universe abruptly emerged out of absolute nothingness. This is the greatest paradox to human intellect. "Nothing" implies absolute void—devoid of matter, time, or law. Let alone a vast universe, not even a single drop of milk can spontaneously generate out of nothingness. The simple rule of mathematics dictates that zero added to zero, no matter how many times, always results in zero. Some attempt to deceive by labeling the "quantum vacuum" of modern physics as nothingness, whereas scientifically, a quantum vacuum is a complex manifestation of energy and physical waves, not absolute nonexistence.

2.     Did the universe create itself? The second possibility is that the universe brought itself into being. This is an even greater logical absurdity. For anything to create itself, it must exist prior to its own creation to perform the act of generating itself. This is akin to someone claiming, "I existed before my birth, and I gave birth to myself." No rational human being can accept such a proposition.

3.     Was the universe created by another created entity? The third possibility is that the universe was brought into being by a force that is itself created, which in turn was created by something else. Here, the atheistic mind becomes trapped in the quagmire of infinite regress. This dilemma can be beautifully illustrated through the analogy of tables: Suppose there is a long row of two-legged tables before us. A two-legged table cannot stand on its own, so it leans on the adjacent table for support, which in turn leans on the next. What does reason dictate? If at the end of this infinite chain, there isn't a four-legged table that stands independently without needing external support, the entire row would collapse to the ground in a split second. You can look at it from another angle: if a soldier needs permission from the officer behind him to fire, and that officer requires permission from the one behind him, and this sequence never ends, will the shot ever be fired? Never! The very existence of the universe is absolute proof that this chain of causes must terminate at a Being who is fundamentally uncaused and independent of all.

4.     Was the universe created by an "Uncreated Creator"? When the first three possibilities are logically invalidated, the fourth and final conclusion shines forth as brightly as the sun: the existence of a Being who is not a creation, but is Eternal, Self-Subsisting, and who clothed this entire universe with existence from nonexistence, is absolutely necessary.

Five Fundamental Attributes of the Creator in the Mirror of Rational Inference

From this universal Quranic argument, we can deduce five essential attributes of the Grand Architect of the universe, without which the system of human intellect cannot function:

·       Eternity: To avoid the fallacy of infinite regress, it is a rational necessity that the First Cause of the universe must not be created by anyone else. He is eternal, without beginning or end.

·       Omnipotence: Look at the micro and macro worlds of the cosmos. If the splitting of a single microscopic atom can release such terrifying nuclear energy, estimating the power of the One who brought billions of galaxies, stars, and this magnificent material system into existence is far beyond human capacity. He is the possessor of absolute power.

·       Transcendence: The Creator of the universe is elevated above and distinct from the constraints of this material universe, space, and time. It is a logical principle that the maker is not identical to the product. The person who manufactures a laptop is neither made of plastic and circuitry nor is he trapped inside the laptop's operating system. Therefore, the Creator is transcendent over material laws.

·       Omniscience: The mathematical balance, intricate laws of physics, and sophisticated design spread across every atom of the cosmos testify that this cannot be the result of a blind accident or explosion. A lifeless, unintelligent matter can never manifest such wise order and discipline. The One who fashioned it possesses absolute knowledge of every particle.

·       Volition/Will: The universe did not always exist; it came into being at a specific moment. This fact proves that the Creator decided to bring the universe into existence through His own volition and choice. This capacity for choice can only belong to a living, conscious Being.

Beyond Philosophy: The Awakening of Human Primordial Nature

Always bear in mind that the Quran does not present these arguments merely for dry philosophical debates or academic amusement. The ultimate purpose of these verses is to awaken the innate primordial nature (fitrah) dormant within man, which has been obscured by desires, arrogance, or heedlessness.

God has pre-programmed the recognition of the Creator and the realization of His grandeur into the very fabric of human nature. When a person contemplates these Quranic inquiries with absolute neutrality and sincerity, their inner conscience stirs, and they cry out: "Yes! I have a Master who watches over me, and whose blessings I depend upon at every single moment."

Conclusion

This unanswerable argument from Surah At-Tur leads us to a clear and definitive conclusion. The existence of God is not mere dogma or mythology, but the grandest rational and objective reality of the universe. The Being who is so powerful, all-knowing, and merciful, who bestowed upon us the priceless gifts of life, consciousness, and intellect, is the sole entity worthy of our devotion. Our duty is to bow before Him, worship Him alone, and live a life filled with gratitude. The ultimate verdict of sound reason is that absolute devotion belongs only to the one Lord who is the sole Master of the cosmos.
